Story of Lynn:

In Loving Memory of My Mum

I am writing this to remember and honour the life of my mum, who left us far too soon at the age of 43. Though her life was filled with challenges, her love and bravery shone brightly, touching the hearts of everyone who knew her.

Mum faced her share of battles, struggling with alcoholism and mental health issues that began during her time in the care system. Despite the hardships she endured, including the dark shadow cast by the visits of Jimmy Saville to the care home she was in, Mum never lost her fierce spirit. Though she rarely spoke of those painful experiences, they left an indelible mark on her, changing her in ways that words cannot fully capture.

Throughout her life, Mum showed incredible resilience. She made numerous attempts to overcome her struggles and find a path to sobriety. Each time she tried, it was a testament to her strength and her deep desire to be the best mother she could be. Her bravery in the face of adversity was truly remarkable, and it is something I will always admire.

Despite the difficulties, Mum's love for me and my brother was unwavering. She made it clear when we saw her how much we meant to her. Her caring nature was evident in the small moments we shared, the warmth of her embrace, and the sparkle in her eye when she looked at us. Even when times were tough, Mum's love never faltered.

Mum had a naturally mischievous side, a bit of a rogue, which brought joy and laughter into our home. Her playful spirit and sense of humour are some of my fondest memories. One of my earliest memories was watching her and my brother Wayne play Sonic together laughing. She had a way of making the ordinary extraordinary, and her laughter was infectious. It's these moments of joy and her love that helped me develop resilience and overcome the difficulties I faced in my own journey in the care system.

On that fateful day when Mum passed away from a stroke, she left behind a void that can never be filled. But she also left behind a legacy of love, courage, and resilience. I was only four and a half when she died, but the love she gave me in those few years is a treasure I carry with me always. Her memory lives on in me and my brother, in the love we continue to share, and in the strength we find in each other.

Mum, you were taken from us too soon, but your spirit and love remain with us forever. We honour your memory today and every day, grateful for the time we had with you and the love you gave us. Rest in peace, Mum. We will always love you.
